On the morning of July 9, 2012, I was listening to KYW on my drive to work when I heard that Police Officer Brian Lorenzo was driving his Philadelphia Police Department motorcycle on I-95 the previous morning when he was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver. I am an avid motorcycle rider and drive the same Harley Davidson that Officer Lorenzo was driving that night. Shocked and upset, I asked myself what my family would do if I did not come home from a ride? How would it impact my 16 and 19-year-old children and my wife of 22 years? It actually brought me to tears! I decided that day that I would do something to make an impact, and thus, the event Heroes Among Us was born.
Our families are the most important people in our lives and losing a loved one is the greatest loss of all. The men and women of the Philadelphia Police Department risk their lives daily. When a police officer sacrifices his or her life in the line of duty, we owe it to their families to take care of them. With your support of this event, we have made a substantial difference, as the Fraternal Order of Police’s Survivors Fund has been doing for years.
The Heroes Among Us event has been going strong since our inaugural evening in 2013. We are growing as an organization and we are expanding our outreach to include two additional charities, in addition to the FOP Survivors Fund. We band together with a passion to help the families of those police officers that have given the ultimate sacrifice and become injured or killed in the line of duty. My dream of creating a charity event to benefit the fallen officers and their families, from the city that I love and grew up in, is now entering its sixth year!
If you would have told me five years ago that we would be going strong and be beyond the half a million mark, I would have said “No way!”
But not only is that the case, we are there because of the contributions and hard work from the people who have supported these efforts along the way. I am proud to be associated with the many participants who have given of their time, talents, energy and resources to support this cause.
The city of Philadelphia is important to me since I was born here, have a long family history, and have worked almost my entire career here. It is an honor and a privilege to pay tribute to the brave men and women who protect our city every day.
